Pondamin and PPH

Pondamin (fenfluramine hydrochloride) was made by American Home Products, one of the world's largest drug companies. Pondamin was a diet drug that worked to lower people's appetite by interfering with the body's production of serotonin. Pondamin use has been associated with pulmonary hypertension and PPH and it is one of the main risk factors for the disease.

Pondamin was recalled in 1997 because it also caused a heart valve disease unrelated to pulmonary hypertension. This web site is for people who were affected by the much rarer side effect of Pondamin: pulmonary hypertension. Pondamin was commonly used with another drug called Phentermine, this combination was known as Fen Phen. Pondamin was used in this combo or often the drug Redux (dexfenfuremine) was used instead.

These diet drugs were effective weight loss treatments and they were best sellers for American Home Products, which made billions of dollars in sales.

Unfortunately, these drugs also caused cases of primary pulmonary hypertension, prematurely ending many otherwise healthy people's lives. Diet drug researchers had long been aware of the link between these drugs and PPH. Especially since a previous study showed a connection with a substantially similar drug in Europe during the 1970s.

Internal company reports show that American Home Products, deliberately tried to suppress the association with PPH and downplayed the risks as insignificant. However, widespread cases of PPH and heart valve disease (unrelated to PPH) ultimately forced the FDA to crack down, and the drugs and the phen fen combo was withdrawn.

Clinical studies have decisively proven the relationship between Pondamin, Fen Phen and Redux and the onset primary pulmonary hypertension.

Pondamin and Redux were two of the most widely prescribed diet drugs in the U.S. In 1996, sales of Pondamin and Redux totaled well over 20 million prescriptions. According to company estimates, 4 million people have used Pondamin and another 2 million have used Redux.

New cases of primary pulmonary hypertension in patients who have used Redux or Pondamin alone or in combination with other weight-loss agents are continuing to be diagnosed. Doctors have reported a new wave of PPH patients over the past several years.

We can help people who have pulmonary hypertension they believe may be related to taking Pondamin and related diet drugs.
